Murça, 33km/20mi southwest of Mirandela, was granted a municipal charter by King Sancho II in 1224. It is famous for the granite figure of a wild boar (on the main street), the subject of many legends, and originally thought to be Iron Age but now considered more likely to be seventh C. Other features of interest are the 17th C. church of the Misericórdia, the parish church (Igreja Matriz) with a Classical granite facade in the pretty market square, and a Manueline pelourinho (pillory column), the symbol of municipal authority.
An agricultural economy, the town of Murça produces important crop varieties.
