Lower Beira Attractions Beira Baixa
Beira Baixa, with Castelo Branco as its capital, extends over an infertile plain between the southern foothills of the Serra da Estrêla and the Tagus.
The economy is similar to that of Alentejo; the predominant type of farming is monoculture (single-crop farming, in this case grain) on large estates, with mixed farming of Mediterranean type (grain, vegetables, fruit, including citrus fruits, olives) in the river valleys. In the extreme western part of the region the fragmentation of land holdings makes it difficult to achieve efficient and profitable working of the land.
