Lisbon Coast Attractions Costa de Lisboa
The Costa de Lisboa, or "Lisbon coast", is the name given to the coast of the peninsula formed by the Serra da Arrábida and its northern outliers between the estuaries of the Tagus and the Rio Sado. Although still largely untouched by international tourism the area is very popular in summer with the people of Lisbon and is especially attractive because of its beautiful scenery and fine beaches. The southern section in particular still has appealing and relatively unspoiled places and empty beaches, although accommodation is limited.
Costa de Lisboa - Cabo de Espichel
Cabo Espichel is the western tip of the peninsula, formed by a westerly outlier of the Serra da Arrábida. This bleak landscape affords impressive views of the coastal scenery, the cliffs falling sheer into the sea. Just north of the lighthouse warning seafarers of the dangers is the Baroque pilgrimage chapel of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, flanked by long two story buildings to accommodate the pilgrims.
Costa de Lisboa - Serra da Arrábida
There are pleasant excursions into the solitude of the hills in the beautiful Serra da Arrábida, now a national park, where the luxuriant vegetation includes many rare species. These include the wild olive tree, the strawberry tree, the mastic tree, holm oak, heather, lemon trees, woodbine and myrtle. The highest point is the Alto do Formosinho (501m/1,643ft), and there are fantastic views from the N 379.1 which winds through the hills.
