Picturesquely situated on the southeast slopes of the Serra da Estrela, the hill town of Covilha (altitude: 700m/2300ft) is a popular base with the Portuguese for exploring the Serra da Estrela. The look of the town is marred somewhat by the surrounding industrial development, since Covilha is the focus of the Portuguese textile industry, producing woolen goods under British license for the international market.
Townscape
Covilha presents a charming picture, with its steep and winding little streets. The town's life is focused on the flower bedecked Praça do Município with the Câmara Municipal (town hall, and location of the tourist information center) and, above the square, the 15th C. church of Santa Maria, its facade decorated with azulejos depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin.
