The modest little market town of Castro Verde (green castle) lies about 60km/37mi southwest of the chief town of the district, Beja, and is surrounded by pastureland and forests of cork oak. Altitude: 245m/804ft
About 6km/4mi south of Aldeia dos Palheiros a little road branches off (4km/2.5mi) to the remains of a settlement of the early historical period, the Castro de Cola (known in Roman times as Ossonoba). Roughly rectangular in shape, it is surrounded by a rampart 5m/16ft high.
The archaeological site of Castro de Cola also houses the Nossa Senhora da Cola, a popular chapel that is visited by many pilgrims each year.
The aisleless church of Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao has an interior completely clad with early 18th C. azulejos depicting scenes from the battle of Ourique.
Of interest is the church of the Chagas do Salvador, decorated with azulejos in a style typical of the region, which was built by Philip II of Spain in the 16th C. on the site of an earlier church.
