The Guaporé Nature Reserve covers an area of 600,000 hectares/1,500,000 acres in the commune of Guajará-Mirim in southern Rondìnia. The chief place in the commune is 333km/207mi from Porto Velho, and the reserve itself is even more remote. Three days' journey by boat from the town of Guajará-Mirim are the ruins of the 18th century fort of Príncipe da Beira. To reach it by road, take BR 364 to Presidente Médici (south of Ji-Paraná) and then BR 429, which runs through the reserve to Príncipe da Beira, on the Bolivian frontier.
