Fort La Reine Museum and Pioneer Village

Manitoba's history is vividly illustrated by the displays in Fort La Reine Museum and the Pioneer Village on the outskirts of Portage La Prairie at the intersection of Highways 1A and 26.
The Fort La Reine Museum and Pioneer Village includes a trading post, a smithy and stables, and the Pioneer Village has an early wooden house, a trapper's cabin, the "Farm of the Century", a country church and an 1880s schoolhouse. Other exhibits include a reconstructed York boat and a Red River wagon, brought here from Joliette, Québec, for Manitoba's centenary. These carts drawn by oxen were the principal means of transport of the early settlers. Built entirely of wood they were very noisy because their wheels were not greased against the dust. A railway service wagon can also be seen.
