Porec - Euphrasius Basilica

The main attraction in the old town of Porec is the Euphrasius Basilica. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 6th Century Byzantine Euphrasius Basilica is known for it beautiful mosaics on gold backgrounds. It was built and named for Bishop Eurphrasius and was constructed in the mid 500s on the small Oratory of St Maurus Martyr, built in the 4th Century. The remains of St Maurus are held in the basilica in a simple sarcophagus which stands on a mosaic floor from the 6th Century. A 13th Century ciborium with marble columns and gold mosaics decorating the upper portion, stands at the front of the church above the steps leading to the altar. The Euphrasius Basilica possesses some religious paintings, which can be found in the 6th Century Bishop's Palace. This area also has ancient stone monuments and Mosaics dating to the 4th Century.
