Liechtensteinklamm

5km/3mi to the south of St Johann the scenery is slashed by the Liechtensteinklamm, one of the most impressive gorges in the Alps, carved out by the Grossarler Ache. The path through the gorge, partly blasted from the rock, climbs up to a huge cauldron with rock walls 300m/1,000ft high and through the narrowest part of the gorge, only 2-4m/6.5-13ft wide, and a tunnel to the 60m/200ft high waterfall at the end of the gorge (20 minutes' walk from the entrance. The best light for seeing the gorge is in the morning. At the southern end of the Grosarl valley nestle the villages of Grossarl (924m/3,032ft) and Hüttschlag (1,020m/3,347ft), the starting-point for a number of climbs.
