Pistoia - Baptistery

Opposite the west end of the Cathedral is the baptistery (1338-59), faced with white and green marble; it was built by Cellino di Nese, to the designs of Andrea Pisano. In the tympanum of the main doorway, which is surmounted by a pediment containing a small rose-window, is a figure of the Madonna; below this, on the lintel, are scenes from the life of John the Baptist; and on either side of the doorway are figures of the Baptist and St Peter. Immediately to the right of the doorway stands a small external pulpit. The baptistery has a font by Lanfranco da Como (13th century).
