Description
On December 29th 1890, men of the U.S. Cavalry massacred 153 Indians at Wounded Knee creek. The Indians were adherents of the Ghost Dance cult, which promised the return of the great buffalo herds and the disappearance of the white man. The ignominious military action put an end to the Ghost Dance and finally broke Indian resistance. It has never, however, been forgotten. In 1973 members of the American Indian Movement occupied Wounded Knee in protest at the United States government's Indian policy. Another protest took place in 1993. The site of the massacre, now a hillside cemetery, is in the Pine Ridge Reservation in the far southwest of South Dakota, on the U.S. 18.
