Arkansas Post National Memorial

 
The Arkansas Post National Memorial is a 389 acre site. It was the first permanent European settlement in the Mississippi Valley and home of the first newspaper in Arkansas, the Gazette. The town was also the first capital of Arkansas. The Post played a part in several different battles, beginning in the 1700's and the memorial commemorates the history of the site.

Arkansas Post was of strategic importance for the French, Spanish, American, and Confederate military. Arkansas Post National Memorial was the site of a major battle during the Revolutionary War when the Spanish and British clashed. A massive earthen fortification known as Fort Hindman was erected in 1862 and then destroyed by Union Troops in 1863.
