Philadelphia - University of Pennsylvania

South of the Zoo is the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, of which Benjamin Franklin was co-founder. On the campus (33rd and Spruce Streets) is the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, with a rich collection of material from Egypt and the Middle East, South and Central America, Greece and Africa.
Founded in 1740, the university opened the nation's first medical school (in 1765). Campus tours are available at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 1 College Hall.

The College Hall building is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology offers a comprehensive collection of artifacts relating to these fields. Highlights include a 12-ton sphinx, mummies, Nigerian Benin bronzes, a pair of 29 foot long frescos (circa 1279-1368 A.D.) from northern China and a Feather cloak from nineteenth-century Hawaii. The UPM has 32 exhibit galleries covering 62,877 square feet, and a collection of approximately a million objects. It was founded in 1887.
