The National Shrine of St John Neumann contains the tomb of St John Neumann, a Czech-born Redemptorist priest who became the fourth bishop of Philadelphia. He was buried under the basement floor in 1860, today his body lies beneath the main altar. St John promoted parochial education and the care of immigrants.
