Philadelphia - Mummers Museum

"Mummer" comes from the Old French word momer, to wear a mask or pantomime. It means a masked or costumed merrymaker, especially at a festival which the city hosts every year. The Mummers Museum features exhibits on the intricate handwork that goes into these elaborate costumes, the String Band Sound, with sound, of course, video performances of past parades, and design sketches used by the various mummery clubs in the creation of their costumes. The museum sponsors weekly concerts from May through September, and hosts other special events.
