Phayao - Wat Ratcha Santhan

Of Wat Ratcha Santhan, a 12th c. teak temple, only sparse remains exist. This marvelous example of Thai temple architecture collapsed during a storm in 1988. In its place can now be found an almost plain construction, with only ruins remaining of the two horn-nosed snakes, which formerly flanked the steps to the entrance with heads held high. Closer inspection reveals wooden roof supports from the old temple, which were incorporated into the building of the new wiharn. A Sukhothai-style statue of Buddha can be found inside. The temple earns praise for the beautiful carving on the tympanum. Interestingly, an almost identical building, Wat Buakkhrok Luang, stands in Chiang Mai.
