Petworth House and Park

Petworth House, a magnificent country house with its 328ft/100m-long garden frontage, gained its present appearance between 1688 and 1696. The extensive garden, designed by Capability Brown, is a masterpiece of English landscape gardening. Among the treasures of the house is one of England's most important collections of paintings. William Turner had a studio here from 1830 to 1837; he loved the local scenery and often painted it.

Many of his oil paintings and watercolors can be admired in the Turner Room. The collection also boasts works by Titian and Rogier van der Weyden, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Marvelous lime wood carvings (1692) by Grinling Gibbons decorate the Carved Room. The excellent collection of ancient sculptures in the North Gallery are no less impressive.
