Vilcashuamán was an important site for both the Chanca and Inca Empires. The area was dominated by the Chanca until it was conquered by the Inca in the mid 1400s. It was an important city in the Inca Empire due to its strategic location, at the junction between the Cusco-Coastal road running east-west and the main Andes road running north-south.
