San Pedro de Casta - Marcahuasi Attractions

About 80km / 48mi inland from Lima is the the small town of San Pedro de Casta and just 3km / 2mi further on is Marcahuasi. Marcahuasi is a high plateau area with unique rock formations in the shape of animals, thought to be the result of wind erosion. Some of the rocks, for example, resemble a turtle, llama, people, and other forms.

Occasionally locals arrange fiestas up here. Very few travelers seem to make the journey to Marcahuasi. Although it is relatively close to Lima, it is much higher, at an elevation of 4100m / 13,250ft. The best option is to spend a night at San Pedro de Casta, located at 3180m / 10,271ft above sea level, to acclimatize before visiting Marcahuasi.
