A wonderful alternative to the fast pace city of Huaraz is the town of Carhuaz. Just 32km / 19mi north of Huaraz, at an altitude of 2,650m / 8,692ft, Carhuaz is a quiet town with spectacular views.
The Plaza de Armas is a beautiful open space with gardens. There is also a Sunday Market, with food and crafts from around the region. This is also a good place for people watching. Just up from the town are the Baños de la Merced, hot springs.
In mid September the town comes alive with the annual La Virgen de La Merced festival. Celebrations involve processions, dancing, fireworks, and other entertainment.
