Montignac - Lascaux et Lascaux II
Lascaux II is 200 meters from the original cave. It is a reproduction of the two galleries, (the Bull room and the Axial Diverticule) and includes most of the paintings in Lascaux. The reproduction looks completely authentic, giving the public the opportunity once again to see the finest display of Paleolithic art in the world.
Near Montignac, which has a ruined castle, is one of the most remarkable prehistoric sites in Périgord, the famous Lascaux Cave, discovered in 1940, with its fine paintings of animals. The cave itself was closed in 1963 to prevent further damage to the paintings, which were suffering from damp and fungoid infection, but since 1983 visitors have been able to see Lascaux II, a faithful reproduction of the cave and its paintings. There is an information center in which films of the interior of the cave are shown.
