Scranton, in the northeast of the state, was once an anthracite-mining center; it is now dominated by the electronics industry. Earlier days are recalled by the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum and the Scranton Iron Furnaces, four old coal-fired smelting furnaces. The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour takes visitors 100 yards underground in a disused mine shaft.
