Johnstown, the only community in Cambria County, is located east of Pittsburgh. It has seen four disastrous floods that have claimed the town. The first two were in 1862 and 1889, then in 1936 and the final one occurred in 1977.
777 unidentified victims of the 1889 flood are buried in the Unkown Plot located within Grandview Cemetery. Other tragedies with historical significance include floods of 1936 and 1977, and the war years with residents buried here.

Johnstown Inclined Plane is a popular tourist attraction in which cars and pedestrians are carried on a 502 ft high plateau.The plane is 996 feet long with a grade of 71 percent. It connects central Johnstown with a residential suburb.

The Johnstown Flood Museum details the catastrophic flood of 1889 that ripped through Conemaugh Valley. An award-winning film, a large 3-D map, sound effects and other exhibits are on display. A notable permanent exhibit is an "Oklahoma" house, a temporary shelter erected for those who had lost their homes. The Oklahoma was renovated, and includes home furnishings and domestic items.

The Johnstown Flood National Memorial spans 165 acres and preserves the remains of the South Fork Dam and portions of the former Lake Conemaugh bed, the site of a tragic flood on May 31, 1889 that claimed 2,209 lives. At the Visitor Center, a 35-minute film recreates the Great Flood of 1889 and is shown daily.
