Palermo - Palazzo Scavuzzo
In the Via Garibaldi stand two palaces, the Palazzo Scavuzzo built shortly after 1500 in the Late Gothic and Renaissance styles, and the Palazzo Aiutamicristo ("Help me, O Christ"). The latter is a building of considerable size which was erected in 1490 by Matteo Carnelivari for the wealthy merchant from Pisa, Guglielmo Aiutamicristo. In 1494 it was extended by Nicolò Grisafi and altered at the end of the 16th century.
Emperor Charles V lived here, and after him his son Don Juan d'Austria, victor in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. An impressive feature is the inner courtyard with its two-storyed loggias and the crenellated upper floor; the entrance is at Via Garibaldi 23.
