Palermo - Palazzo Abatellis / Galleria Regionale della Sicilia

The Palazzo at the east end of Via Alloro in Palermo, near the Foro Italico, was built in 1490 on instructions from Francesco Abatellis, a highly-placed dignitary at the court of King Ferdinand of Spain. The builder was Matteo Carnelivari, the architect of the Palazzo Aiutamicristo which Abatellis wanted to better. The result of their labors is a square building with a richly decorated doorway and an inner courtyard with a two-storeyed loggia on one side.
The palace, all in the Gotho-Catalonian style, was a Dominican priory from 1526 to 1943, and today houses the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, containing both medieval and more modern works of art. The entrance to the gallery rooms is in the palace courtyard.
