Ottenby Description
Near the southernmost tip of the island of Öland is Ottenby, which in the 13th century belonged to a monastery. In the 16th century it was taken over by Gustavus Vasa, and thereafter remained Crown property. The manor house of Kungsgård dates from 1804. To the north, visible from the road, is an Iron Age cemetery area. 2km/1.25mi farther west are two tall limestone mounds known as the King's Stones. The Kungsgård estate is bounded by a wall ("Charles X's Wall") running right across the island, built in 1653 to protect the cultivated land to the north from the deer on the royal estate.
