Degerhamn - Eketorps Borg
|
|
16km/10mi southeast of Degerhamn we come to a refuge fort, Eketorps Borg, with ramparts enclosing an almost exactly circular area. Originally built in the fourth century, it was enlarged during the period of the great migrations and developed into a fortified settlement which was occupied for several hundred years. The inhabitants lived by farming and stock-rearing. In the western part of the site excavations have brought to light the foundations of huts. At the end of the Viking age wooden houses were built which remained in occupation well into the medieval period. Finds of material dating from this period have shown that the inhabitants of the fort had by then taken to trading and seafaring. Some of the Iron Age houses have been reconstructed, and there is a museum.
