The Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1970. It is an important habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds. The majority of the refuge is low lying land which is ideal for spotting mallards, snow geese, hawks, bobwhites and various reptiles

The refuge contains archeological sites with prehistoric artifacts.
