The town of Shawnee (pop. 28,600) is located just east of Oklahoma City. It became a bustling railroad town but lost its bid to become capital of Oklahoma in 1910 to its larger neighbor. The discovery of oil in 1926 improved the town's outlook for the future.
The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Shawnee was founded in 1914 making it one of the oldest museums in Oklahoma.
The permanent collections of the museum feature Egyptian, Greek and Roman art, objects from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as modern art from the 20th century. The museum contains Native American, African and Eastern art.
