El Reno (pop. 16,000) was established in 1889 when it was chosen as depot site for the Rock Island Railroad. A scenic portion of U.S. Highway 81 runs from El Reno to Minco. The old Route 66 also runs through the town.
The Canadian County Historical Museum is located in El Reno's Heritage Park. The grounds have several historic buildings including the first Red Cross canteen in the nation, a hotel and an old jail.

Historic Fort Reno began as a military camp in 1874. It was established as a military fort or post in 1875 and the construction of buildings began in 1876. There is a visitor center/museum in a completely restored 1936 officer's quarters; the chapel, built in 1944 by German POWs - Afrikakorps brought to the US to work; and the cemetery with burials from 1874-1948 - 70 military, including 15 Buffalo Soldiers, scouts,civilians, women and children, 8 unknowns, and 62 German and 8 Italian POWs who died in captivity during WWII.
