The city of Youngstown was named after John Young who surveyed the area in 1796. The city was blessed with an abundance of coal and industry followed this valuable resource. Once a steel producing powerhouse, Youngstown now relies on other industries, most notably education. Youngstown is located midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The Erie Canal runs through town and is a pleasant spot for a stroll.
The Arms Family Museum of Local History in Youngstown is located in the early 20th Century Arts & Crafts-style home built by the Arms family, known formally as "Greystone". The first floor is furnished in period, creating the medieval ambience it must have had when the Arms owned the home. The rest of the home deals with the history of the area, from prehistoric times through to the pioneers and beyond.
