The city of Wapakoneta has a rich history. Originally settled as a Quaker mission in 1809, the city has since grown and prospered. Chartered in 1849, Wapakoneta was once a major railroad hub sending all kinds of manufactured items across America. Wapakoneta is perhaps most famous for being the hometown of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon and a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Fort Amanda State Memorial, located 14km / 9mi from Wapakoneta, recognizes the men who lived and died at Fort Amanda. The obelisk was erected in 1915 and is on the banks of the Auglaize River.
