The small town of Peebles is located in the deep Southern region of Ohio. The town name should not be confused with the retail chain of the same name. Peebles has just over 1,700 residents and is located near Serpent Mound State Park. The town has limited amenities for the visitors but a pleasant lunch or dinner can easily be found.
The Edwin H Davis State Memorial is a large nature preserve. The site is very scenic and is noted for its geologic fault, dolomite cliffs and rare flora. For those people most interested in exploring and activity rather than the science, there is also a cave and hiking trails. The land was donated by Davon, Inc, and named for Edwin H. Davis, the Chairman of the Board.
The Serpent Mounds located near Peebles is considered the finest example of a Serpent effigy in the United States. The 3.5 foot high mound is located on a plateau overlooking the Brush Creek Valley and is .5 mile/ 400 m long. It is believed that the Adena culture built the mound sometime during the time span of 800 BC-AD100.
