Kirtland Attractions

Kirtland is located on the scenic Chagrin River, about a 25 minute drive east of Cleveland. This small town is home to Lakeland Community College, which is the heart of the community. One of Kirtland's most famous attractions is the Kirtland Temple, the first temple of the Church of Latter Day Saints, founded by Joseph Smith Jr. Also of interest is the Holden Arboretum, known for being the largest Arboretum in the United States and home to a huge collection of native and exotic plants.
Historic Kirtland
Historic Kirtland is a perfectly restored village from the 19th Century. A visit here is practically like stepping back in time. Many of the homes have been very nicely restored and can be toured throughout. Of particular note are the schoolhouse and the John Johnston Inn. The visitor's center contains exhibit rooms and a 120-seat theater.

Holden Arboretum
The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland claims to be one of the largest arboretums in the United States. The arboretum encompasses a butterfly garden, wildflower garden, rhododendron garden, and a blueberry pond area to name just a few. There is always something in bloom from spring until fall. Tram tours of the facility are available and are a great way to see the Holden Arboretum considering the size of the area. There are also regular guided hikes, which are a nice way to actively enjoy the gardens.

Kirtland Temple
The Kirtland Temple Historic Center in Kirtland was the first temple of the Latter Day Saints movement founded by Joseph Smith, Jr. The temple was built in the 1830s and is now a National Historic Landmark and open to the public for tours.

When it was built, the Kirtland Temple was one of the largest structures in the state of Ohio. Visitors can learn about the history of the building, the architecture and the Latter Day Saints.

Lake Farmpark
Lake Farmpark is a unique park managed by Metroparks and is located in Kirtland, 40 km / 25 mi east of downtown Cleveland. Here visitors young and old can see a working farm complete with farmers, over 50 animals, and farm implements. Of special note are the intelligent border collies and their herding show. Visitors can also milk a cow if the desire hits.

Newell K Whitney Store and Museum
The Newell K Whitney Store is just one of the historic sites that can be visited on a walking tour of Kirkland. The town offers guided tours that allow visitors a chance to see the historic area of town.
