The area around Bellefontaine has historically been inhabited by American Indians. The town of Bellefontaine flourished when the railroad was built through the area in 1837 but eventually waned in importance as other means of transportation gained ground. Today the town is the headquarters of the Ohio division of Honda of America and continues to prosper.
The Logan County Historical Museum is housed in one of Bellefontaine's neoclassical mansions. The 1906 home was built by William Orr, a prominent member of the community who made his fortune in the lumber industry. The house is furnished in period and adjoined by another building featuring historical displays related to the history of Logan County.
