The city of Ashtabula offers shopping, dining, historical and cultural attractions. The city was an important site on the Underground Railroad in the 1800s. The historic harbor district is a pleasant place for a stroll to take in some of the city's history. Two of the highlights in this area include Hubbard House and the Great Lakes Marine & Coast Guard Museum.
The main shopping area in downtown Ashtabula is located along Main Avenue.
The Ashtabula Maritime and Surface Transportation Museum formerly known as Great Lakes Marine & U S Coast Guard Memorial Museum is located in an old lighthouse keepers house from the late 1800s. Visitors to the museum will learn about the history of Ashtabula Harbor and Lake Erie through old photographs, paintings, models, and other maritime artifacts. The well kept grounds at the Ashtabula Maritime Museum also allow for picnics, with fine views over the Ashtabula Harbor.

Hubbard House was built in 1840s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was a part of the Underground Railway. The house was owned by William Hubbard who was a member of Ashtabula County Anti-Slavery Society.
The Hubbard House has been restored and furnished in 1840s period furniture. On the second floor is an exhibit on the underground railroad, the basement offers information on the Civil War
