Reisseck Group

To the west of Gmünd lies the Reisseck group, an unglaciated range with peaks up to 3,000m/9,900ft, which can be reached in walks lasting between five and 10 hours. There are numerous small lakes (serving power stations) and also ski lifts.

10km/6mi down the Möll Valley from Obervellach, at Kolbnitz, is the lower station of the Reisseckbahn, which ascends to the Schoberboden (2,237m/7,340ft), from which the Höhenbahn, 3,230m/3,530yds long, continues to the Reisseck plateau,, with numerous reservoirs at altitudes of some 2,300m/7,550ft. From the Reisseckhütte (2,281m/7,484ft) the Grosses Reisseck can be climbed in 2.75 hours; this is the highest peak in the Reisseck group, which leads on to the Hohe Tauern in the southeast.
