Lake Merritt Wildlife and Rotary Nature Center
The Rotary Nature Center has seasonal displays of birds, mammals and reptile; in winter, wild geese, herons and egrets. Founded in 1870, this is considered the oldest refuge in North America.

Lakeside Park Garden Center
Not far from the lake, which is surrounded by Lakeside Park, a fairytale park and a Japanese garden have been laid out. There are also a botanical garden, picnic-sites and footpaths.
The gardens are under renovation and will feature drought tolerant mediterranean and native plants to create a Sensory Garden.
