Skien (pop. 46,000), situated on the north bank of the Skienselv near the Skagerrak, is a busy industrial town and the administrative center of Telemark county.
Skien is a terminus for the Telemark canal, is connected to the Norwegian railway network and has a local airport offering domestic and international flights.
The church (1894), with two tall spires, stands on higher ground. South of the church is a monument to the great Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), who was born in Skien.

Brekke Park (Telemark County Museum)
To the east of Skien, on the low hill of Brekke (55m/180ft), is Brekke Park (restaurant, summer theater), with the Telemark County Museum (Fylkesmuseum), which has a small Ibsen collection as well as a number of old peasant houses from the Telemark region.

Gjerpen Church
2km/1.25mi northeast of Skien is Gjerpen church (13th C.; restored 1921). 6km/4mi beyond this a narrow side road on the left (signposted) leads up to the Kikuthytta (325m/1,065ft), from which there is a superb view.
