The road now descends to Byrkjelo, on Road 1. To the left is the road to the Sognefjord; to the right is Sandane (pop. 2,000), beautifully situated at the east end of the Gloppenfjord, another branch of the Nordfjord. At Sandane is the Nordfjord Folk Museum (16 old buildings). On the west side of the fjord are the church of Gjemmestad and a number of Iron Age burial mounds; on the east side one of the largest burial mounds in Vestland, Tinghogjen (50m/165ft across, 7m/23ft high), which catches the last rays of the setting sun on Midsummer Day.
Sandane is a large agricultural area with a small airport offering service through the Norwegian government. The airport is located in fairly rugged terrain with mountains and water nearby.
