Saltfjell

The best approach to the Saltfjell for a walking holiday is by way of E 6 to Rognan and Roads 812 and 813, running west to Storfjord. The striking feature of the Saltfjell is the juxtaposition of glaciers to the west with wide valleys and ridges of hills to the east. The differences in topography are reflected also in differences of climate: in the west it is damp, with relatively mild winters, while the eastern part of the area has a typical inland climate, with low rainfall and cold winters.

Saltfjell Caves
Some 70% of all the natural caves in Norway are in the Saltfjell, and the Grønli Cave to the north of Moi Rana is a celebrated tourist sight. The limestone and marble which are the predominant rocks in the Saltfjell have been dissolved by the numerous watercourses in the mountains, thus forming the caves. The famous Saltfjell marble is still worked on the fringe of the National Park.
