Saanatunturi

Some 3km/2mi beyond the Swedish frontier post, on the left of the road, is a climbers' hostel. From here there is a rewarding climb (two hours; stout footwear essential) to the summit of the distinctively shaped Saanatunturi (1,024m/3,360ft), the sacred mountain of the Lapps, from which there are panoramic views: to the west the Norwegian mountains, partly snow-covered; to the south Kilpisjärvi, to the east the undulating forest country of Finland and to the north Finland's highest mountain, Haltiatunturi (1,324m/4,344ft), a remote and inaccessible peak (from the village of Kilpisjärvi a walk of some 120km/75mi; organized parties, with guides).
