The mining town of Røros, situated on both banks of the Hitterelv, was founded in 1644 after the discovery of large deposits of copper ore in the surrounding area, and during the 17th century many German miners were brought in to work here. The town, now on
UNESCO's World Heritage List, attracts many visitors in summer.
The town was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1679 and then completely rebuilt. There are still 80 wooden houses with the dark pitch-log facades, which gives the town a medieval appearance.
