Peer Gynt Trail

The Peer Gynt Trail offers an attractive alternative (7km/4.5mi longer; tolls) to E 6 between Lillehammer and Vinstra.
From Lillehammer take E 6 as far as Fåberg (6km/4mi) and then turn left into Road 255. In 3km/2mi this comes to Fåberg church (1727; runic stone), from which it is another 11km/7mi to Aulestad, with an old Viking homestead which was acquired by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson in 1874. The property now belongs to the state and is managed by Bjørnson's grandson (museum; open May-September).

Fefor
From Vollsdammen a detour (21km/13mi west) can be made to Dalseter. At Fefor the road runs past Lake Fefor (on left), with Feforkampen (1,175m/3,855ft; 45-minutes climb) to the right; from the summit of the hill there are far-ranging views of the Dovrefjell and Jotunheim. From Volldammen it is 10km/6mi to Vinstra.
Golå
In 8km/5mi from Rauhagen the road comes to Skærvangen, from which a private road (10km/6mi) branches off to join E 6 at Hundorp. 5km/3mi farther on is the tourist center of Golå and Wadahl, 930m/3,050ft above the Golåvann (lookout tower).
Svingvoll
At Svingvoll (alt. 480m/1,575ft) Road 254 goes off on the right to Tretten (8km/5mi). The Peer Gynt Trail leads northwest for 8km/5mi to the villages of Skeikampen and Gausdal (alt. 800m/2,625ft), at the foot of Skeikampen (1,123m/3,685ft; chair-lift, magnificent views). Then on by way of Frøysehøgda (alt. 970m/3,185ft; view of the Gausdal) and Fagerhøy (1,018m/3,340ft) to Rauhagen, at the highest point on the road (1,053m/3,455ft). From here there are extensive views - to the north the Rondane range and the Dovrefjell, with Snøhetta, to the northwest the Jotunheim.
Østre Gausdal
At Segalstad (2km/1.25mi) Road 255 continues west to Vestre Gausdal, while the Peer Gynt Trail follows Road 254, heading north, and in 5km/3mi reaches Østre Gausdal, which has a stone-built medieval church. Nearby is the pastor's house (now unoccupied), the largest in the country.
