Molde, chief town of the county of Møre og Romsdal, lies on the north side of the Moldefjord, sheltered on the north and west by a range of hills. In its mild climate roses flourish which normally do not grow so far north. During the summer the town is a popular tourist destination. An
international Jazz Festival is held here in August. There is good fishing in the surrounding area.
Founded in the 15th century, Molde received its municipal charter in 1742. During the Second World War it was largely destroyed but after the war was rebuilt in modern style. The main industries are textiles and ship fittings. Molde is also an educational center.
The surrounding areas of Molde offer popular rock climbing, ice climbing, bouldering, glacier and basejumping opportunities.
One of Norway's largest folk museums, the Romsdal Museum, is located in Molde. Buildings from around the region were moved here to form a cluster.
