Borgund (alt. 345m/1,130ft), at the mouth of the Lðrdal, has a small stave church, black with pitch, the best preserved in the country. It is thought to have been built about 1150. Apart from a window inserted at a later period it has been carefully restored to its original form, preserving its original layout. The two doorways are richly
decorated, and the west doorway has a runic inscription which helped to date the church. The interior also features a medieval square-shaped baptismal font made of soapstone. The belfry, between the old and the new church, was restored about 1660 in its old form.
