The Arctic Circle also marks the approximate southern boundary of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis which can be observed on clear winter nights. This phenomenon is caused when electrically charged particles emitted by the sun are caught up in the earth's magnetic field. They then produce striking light effects in the thin ionized upper atmosphere at heights of between 70 and 1,000km (40 and 620mi).
The sky is lit up by bluish arcs of light, glowing coronas and shimmering curtains of radiance flaring over the sky in constant movement, offering the fortunate spectator an unforgettable experience.
