Londonderry - Eastern Scenic Villages

The circular tour of Giant's Causeway and the Antrim Coast takes in a number of scenic towns, including: Coleraine, Portstewart and Ballycastle. The A 2 runs east through the charming villages of Eglinton and Ballykelly to Limavady (18mi/29km; on the left the new Foyle Bridge), an old town in the Roe valley.

Portstewart, Ireland

From Coleraine the route returns to the coast, coming after 6mi/10km to Portstewart (pop. 4,000), which has beautiful sandy beaches and a picturesque harbor. Portrush, 4mi/6km to the east, is also good for bathing and has good views across to the offshore Skerry Islands.
The road continues on to the Giant's Causeway, passing the 14th C. Dunauce Castle, built on an isolated crag and linked with the mainland by a bridge.

Portstewart Strand

Portstewart Strand is a spectacular two mile strand with a beach and an important dune system.
The beach is always open with picnic facilities nearby.

Antrim Coast

The road from Ballycastle to Cushendall, passing the famous Glens of Antrim, is the most beautiful coastal road in Ireland. From Cushendall it is possible to continue along the coast to Belfast (48mi/76km) or alternatively to return to Derry by the very attractive inland road via Glenariff (A 43), Kilrea and Dungiven.

Moneymore, Ireland

Moneymore (pop. 1,250) is located 5.5mi/9km south of Magherafelt.

Springhill House

Springhill is a 17th C whitewashed house owned by the National Trust. It features family furniture, paintings, ornaments and other interesting memorabilia. Of particular interest is the extensive costume collection. The house is surrounded by secluded walled gardens and woodland walks.

Dungiven, Ireland

Dungiven (pop. 2,200) is located southeast of Londonderry on the A6.

Banagher Old Church

Banagher Old Church just outside of Dungiven is an interesting ruin featuring a nave from 1100, a chancel from 1200 and a tomb shaped as an Irish church.

Priory & O'Cahan's Tomb

On the east side of Dungiven is an Augustinian priory with an impressive 15th C. tomb of Cooey-na-Gall, an O'Cahan chief who died in 1385.

Limavady, Ireland

Limavady (pop. 8,015) is an ancient town that takes its name from a castle.

Strabane, Ireland

Strabane (pop. 35,700) is an important agricultural town on the Mourne and Finn.

Gray's Printing Press

Gray's Printing Shop on Main Street in Strabane houses an 18th C printing press and a collection of 19th C hand printing machines. At this press, John Dunlap, printer of the American Declaration of Independence, and James Wilson, granfather of President Woodrow Wilson learned the printing trade.
"The Power of Print" is an audio-visual display telling the history of printing.

Woodrow Wilson Ancestral Home

In Dergault, 2mi outside Strabane on the Plumbridge Road, is the ancestral home of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. It was owned by his grandparents.

Castlederg, Ireland

Castlederg is a pleasant town.

Visitor Centre-Davy Crockett Display (closed)

ATTRACTION IS CLOSED.
The Castlederg Visitor Centre presents ten video presentations telling the story of the area. A special model display of Alamo Fort, Texas recaptures Davy Crockett's last stand. Crockett's family came from the Castlederg area.

Arthur Cottage

The cottage is where the forebears of Chester Alan Arthur once lived. It features displays of rural life in the past and the story of Arthur's Presidency. During summer times, there are craft demonstrations.
