Pukapuka / Danger Island
Cook Islands Hotels
Pukapuka (1.2sq.km/.74sq.mi), also known as Danger Island, is a triangular atoll consisting of three motus and a sandbank. Motu Kotawa and Motu Ko are uninhabited but are under cultivation. On Motu Pukapuka are three small villages (Roto, Yato and Ngake) of low houses and huts. Roto is the main center, with the post office, church, administrative offices and shops. Here too are substantial houses built of wood and coralline limestone. The only vehicles on the island are bicycles. The shallow lagoon is suitable only for motorboats or outrigger boats.
25km/15.5mi southeast of Pukapuka is Tima Reef, a small flat coral island only 450m/1473ft across. It is believed to be a fragment of the Pukapuka atoll, which was formerly much larger
