Catawba County Museum of History, Newton, North Carolina
A visit to the Catawba County Museum of History in Newton is worth a visit just to see the building that it is housed in. The 1924 Courthouse has been restored to its former glory and features interesting sculptures and curving stairways. The museum features the life and times of the Scotch-Irish, German, English, and African people that settled here in the 19th Century. The Catawba County Museum of History also has an extensive collection of archives of interest to persons wanting to do in depth research.
Salisbury, North Carolina
Salisbury is an historic city worth taking the time to explore. Try taking advantage of some of the local history sights on a walk through the historic district. The African American Heritage Trail is a self guided tour leading past historical monuments and offering information on the most influential African-Americans in the Salisbury community. There are also numerous attractions related to the history of railroading and the Civil War.For those looking for some outdoor fun the area also offers hiking trails, parks, campgrounds, lakes, and more.
Josephus Hall House
The wonderful Josephus Hall House had its beginnings in 1820 as a schoolhouse. Located in Salisbury, the immaculately restored home is now open to visitors. Exhibits on the life and times of Dr Josephus Hall are coupled with period furniture, decorations, a china display, and a fine collection of silver items will be sure to impress the visitor. Josephus Hall House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Grimes Mill
For an interesting perspective on how flour was ground, stop in at the Grimes Mill when visiting Salisbury. This mill is unique because unlike traditionally water-powered mills this mill used steam power. The mill is also unique in that it is housed in a 5-story building built in 1896. The Grimes Mill is the only roller mill in the state of North Carolina.
North Carolina Pottery Center, Seagrove, North Carolina
If you are into handicrafts, and pottery in general, a visit to the North Carolina Pottery Center, located in Seagrove should be on your itinerary. In this light and airy building, visitor will find all manner of pottery and in the permanent collection, a history of pottery's evolution from prehistoric Native American work through until today. The North Carolina Pottery Center also hosts traveling pottery exhibits from around the world, check to see what's in town when you are planning to be there.
Murray's Mill Historic Complex, Catawba, North Carolina
Murray's Mill Historic Complex, located near Catawba, is a great spot to visit. Here visitors will find four restored buildings, Murray's mill, Murray and Minges General Store, Wheathouse Exhibit Gallery, and the John Murray house. The complex has expansive grounds and they are a great place to go for a stroll or have a pleasant picnic by the pond behind the dam. Murray's Mill Historic Complex is a 10-minute drive from Interstate 40.
Peter Ney's Grave, Cleveland, North Carolina
The grave of Peter Ney is located in Cleveland and surrounded by mystery. This man was for a period of time, a teacher in the Carolinas. However, many believed that he was actually Michel Ney, Duke of Elchingen, Prince of Moskova, and a military commander under Napoleon. Rumor had it that he had escaped to the United States and lived under the assumed name of Peter Stuart Ney. There is a reference to this on Ney's grave headstone in Cleveland.
Hanging Rock State Park, Danbury, North Carolina
Hanging Rock State Park is the perfect escape from urban life to nature. Located near Danbury, the park features a whole slew of outdoor pursuits ranging from hiking to biking to swimming and fishing. Camping and cabins are available for those wishing to stay overnight and the nearby town of Danbury can provide any additional supplies you may have forgotten. Hanging Rock State Park makes for a great day trip from Charlotte, Richmond, or Raleigh.

Lazy 5 Ranch, Mooresville, North Carolina
Want to experience the thrills of Africa but don't have the resources to get there? Well the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville is just the answer. Here visitors can drive their vehicle through large expanses of natural area complete with exotic animals. Some of the animals you will drive past are giraffes, buffalos, and zebras along with 747 others. Also on the premises are a petting zoo, gift shop, and a horse barn.
Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Site, Mount Gilead, North Carolina
For those interested in pre-Columbian life in Peidmont North Carolina, a visit to the Town Creek Indian Mound State Historical Site near Mount Gilead is in order. This well laid out historical site tells the story of the Pee Dee Indians. Visitors can see the reconstructed ceremonial center including the mound complete with temple, the minor house, and mortuary. Also on site is a visitor's center providing additional insight and informative displays on the area.
Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, Pinnacle, North Carolina
If you are passing through Pinnacle and would like to find out more about the old days of farming be sure to stop in at the Horne Creek Living Historical Farm. The farm is more than just a preserved set of buildings; it also contains rare breeds of animals and plants that would have been in existence when the first pioneers arrived. Visitors are welcome to participate in the daily activities that can range from cutting the lawn to shucking a corncob.
North Carolina Transportation Museum, Spencer, North Carolina
The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer is located in the old Southern Railway Company's locomotive repair center. On site visitors will find a train depot, a 37-bay Roundhouse with locomotives and rail cars, as well as antique automobiles.The North Carolina Transportation Museum also caters to children and offers a "Junior Engineer" program targeted at children ages 12 and under. A visit to the facility is a fun outing for both young and old.
Statesville, North Carolina
Statesville is a historic town with plenty to entertain visitors. The town is known for its two main festivals, the CrossRoads PumpkinFest and The Carolina BalloonFest, a hot air balloon event that draws crowds from throughout the area.Statesville's historic downtown area features shops and restaurants along with the many historic buildings. One of the most impressive buildings is the old Statesville Train Depot.
Fort Dobbs State Historic Site
For those interested in the history of North Carolina, a visit to Fort Dobbs State Historical Site, near Statesville, is in order. When visiting the site, visitors will find the archeological ruins of Fort Dobbs, a visitor's center, walking trails, and picnic facilities. Fort Dobbs State Historical Site is handicapped accessible in all areas and a visitor center on-site sells interesting 18th Century reproductions along with other unique gifts.
Children's Museum of Iredell County
The Children's Museum of Iredell County is a great spot to take the kids on an rainy day. Located in Statesville, the museum has a wonderful array of interactive displays that children up to age eleven will enjoy. The Children's Museum shares space with the Iredell Museum of Arts and Heritage so a visit to both could be combined.
Iredell Museum of Arts and Heritage
The Iredell Museum of Arts and Heritage, located in Statesville, is the cultural center for this city. The museum features a permanent collection and has gallery space where traveling national and international exhibits set up. Also on site is the Iredell Children's Museum with displays and activities targeted at those not necessarily interested in fine art.
Asheboro, North Carolina
The city of Asheboro was founded on Christmas Day in 1776. Asheboro is spread over approximately 15 square miles and has a population of just over 17,000 residents. One of the key attractions of Asheboro is the North Carolina Zoological Park and Gardens, the world's largest natural habitant zoo. The city is home to several major employers including Black & Decker and Georgia Pacific.
North Carolina Aviation Museum
The North Carolina Aviation Museum is located just outside of Asheboro. The museum features aircraft from a variety of time periods and dating as far back as WWI. The main focus military aircraft and also houses a collection of other military items including uniforms and other artifacts.On display at the North Carolina Aviation Museum visitors will find a Piper J-3 Cub, Stearman, Swiss P3, C-45, and more.The museum is also going to become the NC Aviation Hall of Fame.
North Carolina Zoological Park
The North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro is one of the best zoos in the state. The zoo features domestic and exotic animals in enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats, with the same or similar plants as would be found in the wild. The North Carolina Zoological Park is very large with miles of walking trails so be prepared for a big day. This is a great outing for families.
Gaston County Museum of Art and History, Dallas, North Carolina
The Gaston County Museum of Art and History has a diverse collection of items from the surrounding area in its permanent collection. The museum also hosts frequent national and international traveling exhibits so be sure to check in and see what's on when you are in town. A great gift shop has a wide variety of items for sale for those wishing to take home a keepsake.
Rankin Museum, Ellerbe, North Carolina
A visit to Ellerbe would not be complete without a visit to the Rankin Museum. Here visitors will find a multitude of displays related to four major areas; Natural History, Early America, archeology, and paleontology. The Rankin Museum is renown for its diverse and unique collections. A visit to the museum can be combined with an afternoon at the North Carolina Speedway, which is located nearby.
Hickory, North Carolina
The pleasant city of Hickory was incorporated in 1870 and has grown over the years to now be home to over 320,000 people. Hickory, like High Point, produces much of the furniture in the United States. Hickory is also noted as a center for the production of fiber optic cable, producing approximately 40 percent of the world's supply.
Arts & Science Center of Catawba Valley
The Arts & Science Center of Catawba Valley makes for a fascinating afternoon or day excursion. Located in the pleasant town of Hickory, the Arts & Science Center of Catawba Valley has a wide variety of exhibits, many of which are hands on and interactive. The center also runs an extensive educational program focused on bringing an understanding of science to today's youth. A gift shop is also on the premises and it stocks an interesting assortment of items both educational and fun.
Catawba Science Center
The Catawba Science Center, located in Hickory, has a slogan "Where the magic of learning and the science of fun occur everyday". It is an apt slogan as the center has a multitude of fun and interactive displays to delight young and old. The Catawba Science Center also has an active educational program along with a regular rotation of national and international exhibits. Be sure to check to see what's on when you are in town.
Hickory Museum of Art
While in Hickory, why not stop in for a little culture at the Hickory Museum of Art. This museum is one of the cultural institutions in town and has a well renown collection of American Art. Another collection of note is the works done in North Carolina clay. Davidson County Historical Museum, Lexington, North Carolina
Visitors to Lexington interested in learning more about the local region should be sure to visit the Davidson County Historical Museum. The museum is housed in the Davidson County Courthouse, a wonderful old antebellum courthouse built in the mid 19th Century. The museum features a variety of exhibits and the perfectly preserved courtroom on the 2nd floor is of particular note.
Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, Mount Airy, North Carolina
The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, located in the town of the same name is a treasure trove of interesting history related to the surrounding areas. Letters, diaries, displays and books help tell the story of the development of this scenic area nested at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The collection of these items at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History spans over 150 years.
Shelby, North Carolina
Shelby is located in southwestern North Carolina. Each year the town hosts a large county fair, attracting visitors from all over the state.The Central Shelby Historic District is a good place to begin a tour of the community.
